| I N T R O D U C T I O N VOLVO ENGINE HARNESS PART NUMBER COLLECTION BELOW, CLICK HERE My name is Dave. I've been a Volvo hobbyist since 1988 and I have owned a lot of Volvos over the years. It wasn't long before I discovered that wire insulation on certain Volvo engine wire harnesses began decomposing a number of years after these cars were sold. The WORST problems occurred in all 1980-1987 Volvos. I discovered that Volvo was well aware of the problems and they got busy selling and installing replacement harnesses in a lot of these cars. Soon I began finding these near new replacement harnesses in wrecked Volvos in local salvage yards. I began finding them so frequently that I began salvaging them and offering them to others who needed them. Over the years I estimate that I recycled well over a thousand used engine harnesses from wrecked 200 and 700 Volvos. As a result, I have a acquired many years of Volvo wire harness experience. I have compiled a LOT of what I have learned over the years into this Volvo Harness Page. It's compiled from many years of "salvage yard research" and other info from numerous Volvo parts resources in the Volvo community. Each of the below part numbers is designated as a main engine wire harness, unless otherwise noted. Some are for ignition harnesses (if it's a separate part for that car). It has 12 terminals which are connected through this harness to the ABS Control Unit under the dash. The existing plug in your car may be re-used and installed by you. | INSTALLATION GUIDE This SHIELDED repair cable has THREE wires, which will be fed through the firewall (left side is best for a LHD model, since your Ignition Control Unit is on that side under the dash) and then the three wires will be inserted into your BOSCH IGNITION CONTROL UNIT (ICU) connector plug. If you have a RHD model, then the ignition control unit will be on the opposite side, so in this case it would be best to feed the wires through the right side. When passing the wire terminals through the firewall, locate a place where the existing harness passes through. If that place is very tight, to avoid damaging the terminal ends, wrap then in tape to protect them. In a 1985-89 700 model the ICU can be found under the left side dash. Once the control unit is located, unplug the 25-pole connector and find a Phillips head screwdriver so the connector can be disassembled.   |
 This 25-pole connector may have ONE or THREE Phillips head screws you'll need to remove, then the connector halves will separate. You might need to unwrap some black tape to complete this. The THREE wires in this repair harness are usually colored RED, BLACK and BLUE. They go into ICU connector positions 4, 10 and 24. These wire colors were not always consistent year by year, so your harness wire colors may be different.  The 25-pole ICU connector has position numbers 1 through 25 clearly marked on the plastic body. You must locate the existing wires in positions 4, 10 and 24. Those three need to be removed. They will come out the back once released. Once removed they will not be needed.   If the wire colors in the repair harness you received are different from those shown here, you can use this info below to match them up.  MORE NOTES ON DISASSEMBLING THE 25-POLE ICU CONNECTOR   This first connector image above is from a Volvo guide on disassembling an original LH ICU connector. Some connectors will have these slotted plastic pieces or locks (in first pic) and some will not (2nd pic). If the locks are present, they need to be pulled out in order to allow terminals to be released and pulled out of the back. Once the three original terminals are removed, the new terminals are inserted from the back. Then the connector is reassembled. For those feeling threatened by this job, it can be done relatively easily, in my case under 4 hours of puttering slowly. First,
unhook
the ground battery cable. Lay
out your new harness and get acquainted with
it. Label the connections. Under
the Intake Manifold: Remove the knock sensor
connector and temp sensor connector (gray).
The knock sensor cable is NOT replaced with a new
one from the engine harness, it's just easier to
work with it out of the way. Remove
the large red cable (13 mm hex nut) and female
wire connector on the starter, remembering to write
it down and label what goes where (there are two connections on the starter
that the small female connector will fit on....
but only one is correct. This is the most
common "no-start" problem for installers). You
may need to snip a number of black nylon cable
zip-ties along the way. Unplug
the coolant sensor connector (this is a 2-wire
spring type connector) by the heater hose inlet on
the head (under the intake manifold). Look for
more zip-ties to clip. Go along the firewall and try to unhook the heavy black zips-ties holding the old harness --- they will probably break since they're brittle. Now you can remove most of the old harness from the engine area and install the new. Passenger
fender:
Remove
the two large Phillips screws holding the coil in
place and lay it toward the center of the engine
bay. This is a good time to service oil and flame trap area if needed. The main thing is ensuring success is to make drawings, write things down and label harness connections, both old and new.
